Protests in Romania continue despite resignation of minister of justice

People rallied near the government building in Bucharest, for the 10th day in a row, hours after the minister of justice, Florin Iordache, resigned, amid controversies regarding controversial amendments to the Criminal Code that he backed and that were later repealed.

Around 5,000 people asked for the resignation of the government led by Sorin Grindeanu. Several thousands gathered in other Romanian cities. Also, several hundred people continued to ask for the resignation of president Klaus Iohannis, in a separate protest.

The protests were set to continue throughout the weekend in Romania.

Iordache was the second minister that stepped down after Florin Jianu made a similar move last week. Jianu, who was the minister of entrepreneurship, said upon his resignation that Romanians don’t deserve what’s happening to them.

Some of the protesters say they don’t trust this government after it approved the controversial amendments to the Criminal Code in a late night meeting.

Representatives of the judiciary, alongside the foreign embassies and representatives of the local and foreign investors warned that the approval of changes in such a manner risk undermining Romania’s rule of law and anti-corruption practices.

Meanwhile, the multinational firms were accused by the ruling coalition of playing a role in the ongoing street protests. AmCham Romania, on the largest business associations that represents American, international and local investors, vigorously rejected such claims,
