Romanian president Klaus Iohannis underlined the close ties that Romania has with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization during the celebrations of the Navy Day held in Constanta city.
Iohannis said that Romania will increase its maritime defense capabilities in the next year, in line with NATO’s strategy.
“As an allied that is actively involved in the actions of NATO, Romania will pursue, going forward, the consolidation of security and defense in the naval area. In 2017, we will continue the exercises and training activities, at a more complex level together with the allies and the partners from the Black Sea region. This is an objective that I have undertaken and that was agreed at the summit in Warsaw. To complete its missions, the Romanian Naval Forces need with priority the right equipment and the increase of its interoperability level,” said the president.
Iohannis added that NATO members have agreed to enforce a complex defense strategy in the Black Sea region, which also covers the terrestrial, air components.
The president said in his speech that after Russia has illegally annexed Crimea in 2014, the Black Sea has become a point with “strategic weight” for NATO.
“Romania’s position and its major security options are even more decisive now,” said Iohannis.
