The Romanian Government has approved yesterday a bill that will see the pollution tax for cars decrease by up to 25 percent. Laszlo Borbeley, the minister of Environment and Forestry, mentioned that Romanians who paid the pollution tax after July 2008 may receive a portion of their money back under the new law.
According to the new bill, a single payment will be made for all new or second-hand cars that are registered for the first time in Romania. This applies to both local and foreign manufactured vehicles. The measure will also apply for vehicles that have been registered before 2007.
The total revenue from the pollution tax on cars reached RON 700 million in 2010. The new bill should bring additional revenue of RON 331 million per year. The collected sums will be used for funding various environmental programs including the “Rabla” governmental scheme, which saw over 190.000 old vehicles removed from circulation, last year alone. Another 110.000 – 120.000 old cars are expected to be removed from the Romanian roads this year.
