Prime Minister Emil Boc came out with a statement today regarding the protests that took place over the week-end, condemning the violence and urging for a more intense dialogue.

“Freedom of expression is guaranteed in Romania. My message is very clear. No type of street violence is tolerated, any peaceful protest within the limits of the law is legal. The obligation of the state is for the citizen to be safe wherever one is,” he said, adding that “on the medium and long term, any action of violence endangers the economic situation of the country.”

The prime minister also said he called for “the intensification of dialogue at all levels.”

“We understand the difficulties that Romanians are going through. We know we are not living good times. We know that the measures we have taken brought them troubles, but I want to thank people for the fact that we managed to save the country from collapse and reach a relative stability,” said Boc.

Regarding the disagreement regarding the current administration and Raed Arafat over the new health law, Boc said “Raed Arafat is welcome in the ministry, if he so wishes. The health Minister will give all the details on this subject.”

Boc also said health minister Ladislau Ritli was delegated to appoint a team that should draft a new health bill.
