In 2017, households in the European Union (EU) spent 13 percent of their total consumption expenditure on transport. This represents a total expenditure of over EUR 1.1 trillion, equivalent to 7.1 percent of the EU’s GDP or EUR 2,100 per EU inhabitant.
Transport is the EU’s second largest household expenditure item after housing (24.2 percent of total consumption expenditure). Food and non-alcoholic beverages follow in third place (12.2 percent).
In this ranking, Romania has the fourth-lowest share of expenditure, with 11.1 percent of total household expenditure.
Slovenia and Lithuania spend the most, Slovakia spends the least
In the EU in 2017, the share of household expenditures for transport was the largest in Slovenia (16.3 percent) and Lithuania (16 percent) They were followed by Germany (14.7 percent), Luxembourg (14.4 percent) and Bulgaria (13.9 percent).
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Slovakia (7.9 percent), the Czech Republic (10.1 percent), Belgium (11.1 percent), Romania (11.2 percent), Estonia and Spain (both 11.1 percent) spent the lowest share of their household expenditure on transport.
