Starting today, the validity of Romanian passports will double from 5 to 10 years, for citizens who are 18 or older.
People aged over 18 who submit their papers from today onwards will receive passports that will be valid for 10 years, and not just five years, as they were until now.
For children under the age of 12, passports will be valid for three years, and for those aged 12 to 18 the document will expire five years after the date it was issued.
The new law that comes into effect on July 20 brings important changes to the temporary passport as well: people will have to prove their need to travel abroad urgently. Health, family issues, or work issues will be seen as valid reasons, but they must be proven with documents.
Passport costs do not change as the new law enters into force. The price of a temporary passport is RON 96 and an electronic passport costs RON 258.
