According to data from the Labor Inspection Authority, as of September 13, 2023, there were 20,892 Nepalese employees actively working in Romania, with 21,668 individual employment contracts. Nepal is the non-EU country with the largest number of citizens employed in Romania’s labor market, following Sri Lanka, Turkey, India, and Ukraine.

Due to this large amount of workers, Minister of Labor and Social Solidarity, Simona Bucura-Oprescu, welcomed a delegation from Nepal led by Sharat Singh Bhandari, the Minister of Labor and Social Security of Nepal, in a significant move towards bolstering cooperation in the labor market.

“Nepalese citizens working in Romania have the same rights and responsibilities as Romanian employees. We are pleased to hear that you have initiated the process of establishing an embassy in Bucharest, especially as we mark 55 years of bilateral diplomatic cooperation between our countries this year,” stated Simona Bucura-Oprescu.

The Nepalese Minister expressed gratitude for the warm reception and assistance that Romanians have provided to their fellow citizens integrating into a different cultural space within Romania.

“Nepal is among the most peaceful countries in the world. We have decided that now is the most appropriate time to visit Romania and express our gratitude for the way our citizens are received here. We are delighted to bring the professional skills that Nepalese workers possess to this country,” stated Sharat Singh Bhandari, the Minister of Labor and Social Security of Nepal.

Discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in the labor market, harmonizing the legislative framework, and consolidating bilateral dialogue between Romania and Nepal. This cooperation is aimed at benefiting both Romania’s economic environment and Nepalese citizens working in Romania.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Romanian and Nepalese parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding cooperation in the fields of labor and social protection.
