Optogan, a company owned by Russian billionaire Mihail Prohorov which runs its activity in the field of green Solid State Lighting (SSL) has entered the Romanian market via a partnership with KDF Energy, a company owned by Romanian George Brailoiu that trades with greenhouse gas emissions certificates, according to a press release.

“In the Balkan area, we estimate a EUR 25-30 million market for SSL luminaries by the end of 2012 and we expect Romania to be one of the key countries for developing the region”, according to Ove Sörensen, senior director sales & business development at Optogan.

Optogan is also taking into account the construction of an assembly unit which would require an investment of EUR 15-20 million.

“Such an investment depends on the support we will receive from central and local authorities, the quality of the labor force, the customs taxes and the level of demand in Romania and the neighboring states,” said Sörensen for Mediafax newswire.

Optogan products will be distributed in Romania, Greece and Bulgaria through a strategic distribution partnership with KDF Energy, Romanian leader in trading with greenhouse gas emissions certificates.

“We project to invest EUR 1.5 million during the next 12 months for developing distribution channels for Optogan products in this region. Romania is strategic part, of the first wave of development for Optogan especially at Eastern European level”, said Brailoiu, owner of KDF Energy.

The market of Solid State Lighting luminaries has an important potential for the next 3-5 years, given EU’s efforts to reduce up to 80 percent in energy consumption.

European Union officials are making efforts to reduce electricity consumption and to eliminate, by 2012, traditional inefficient light bulbs. EU official data project 5 to 10 billion euro savings each year only from using energy saving bulbs and expect the funds to be used in developing other green technologies.

Globally, LED lighting solutions were first adopted in 2007 and currently represent approximately 5% of total luminaries market.

“SSL luminaries, with low power consumption, represent the future of our industry. Optogan aims at positioning itself as market leader in SSL within Eastern Europe, with its strong market in Russia. With the support from KDF Energy as a key partner, we expect to see a steep growth of LED adoption in the next 18 months in the Balkan Region”, said Robert Ambrozie, business development manager for KDF Energy and responsible for coordinating the partnership with Optogan in the Balkan region.
