More than 6.6 million Romanians suffer from acute poverty, which places Romania on the second place in Europe after Bulgaria, as shown by the data released by Eurostat.
Information from Eurostat shows that 41.4 percent of the Romanian population, representing nearly 8.9 million people, risks poverty and social exclusion.
However, the collected data was reported to a total population of 21 million, as the data was collected in 2010. According to the preliminary results of the Romanian census, the population of the country has fallen to 19 million.
The Eurostat survey shows that the EU states with the most impoverished population are Bulgaria (42 percent), Romania (41 percent), Latvia (38 percent), Lithuania (33 percent), and Hungary (30 percent).
At the opposite pole there are countries such as the Czech Republic (14 percent), Sweden and The Netherlands (15 percent), Austria, Finland and Luxembourg (17 percent), where people have a much better life standard.
