Insurer Omniasig Vienna Insurance Group, together with Salvamont Rasnov and tourism association Oxigen, start an insurance project of mountain peak Omu, which at 2,505 m is the highest mountain top permanently populated in Romania.

The project will be developed until September. The first stage was the restoration of mountain trails on Busteni- Pichetul Rosu segment in July, the second stage-the insurance of  Pichetul Rosu- Malaiesti chalet track in August and the development of the touristic table Omu peak in September.

“Omniasig initiated this project so that Romanians enjoy a safer trek to this famous peak from Bucegi. It’s a campaign of social responsibility and empowerment to improve the trekking to Omu peak. It’s more a campaign for human resources involvement. In the first stage there were 300 Omniasig employees who volunteered, out of 1,100 that the company has, for the restoration of the mountain trek from Busteni and we hope to have more volunteers, “ said Mihai Tecau, board president of Omniasig Vienna Insurance Group.

“Within Oxigen association, we promote the mountain spirit and if there are more informed tourists, there will be safer mountain treckkings. Due to the weather conditions, the trails get damaged and they need to be changed once in three-four years. If they are less visible, the possibility of getting lost in the mountains increases. We also want in the next stage to build informational panels on the Romanian flora and fauna, and map panels, because tourists rarely inform about the trek,” said Diana Tampu, project coordinator within Oxigen Tourism for Nature Association.

The second stage of the project will comprise the development of Pichetul Rosu- Malaiesti track with wood stairs, the installation of chains and stairs support for difficult treks and the replacement of footbridges, as well as building informational panels on Romanian flora and fauna, and map panels.

“Romanians don’t have the mountain culture; 80 percent of the accidents take place due to the tourists’ negligence- the lack of appropriate equipment and the lack of information,” says Salvamont Rasnov.

According to the study made by Omniasig, “Romanians’ relation with the mountain” at national level, only 30 percent of people reached Omu peak, even if 90 percent of them recommend hikings there. The trek segments insured by Omniasig are annually visited by 4,000 persons and the Malaiesti chalet hosts over 5,000 people annually.
