Employment rate in Romania exceeded 70 pct in Q2 2018

In the second quarter of 2018, the employment rate of the population aged 20-64 was 70.7 percent, surpassing by 0.7 percentage points the national target of 70 percent set in the context of the 2020 Europe Strategy. 

In the second quarter of 2018, the working population of Romania totalled 9.212 million people, of which 8.8 million employed and 380,000 unemployed.

The employment rate of the working age population (15-64 years) was, in the second quarter of 2018, 65.5 percent, up 2.4 percentage points on the previous quarter. The rate was higher for males (74.1 percent vs. 56.7 percent for women) and in urban areas (65.9 percent vs. 65 percent in rural areas).

The employment rate of young people (15-24 years) was only 25.6 percent.

The unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2018 was 4.1 percent, down 0.6 points versus the rate registered in the previous quarter.

By gender, the gap between the two unemployment rates was 1.4 percentage points (4.7 percent for men compared to 3.3 percent for women), and by residential area, 0.3 percentage points (4.3 percent in the rural area compared to 4 percent in the urban area). By age group, the unemployment rate reached the highest level (15.5 percent) among young people (15-24 years).
