The number of foreign tourists in Romania went up by 8 percent in the first five months of the year compared with the same period of 2016 to 914,300, while the number of Romanian tourists who preferred to spend their holidays in Romania climbed by 11.9 percent to 2.93 million, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
In May, there were 715,400 Romanian tourists registered, by 12.4 percent more compared with 2016 and 264,300 foreign tourists, a growth by 6.1 percent compared with May 2016.
Most of the foreign tourists (199,900) came in May from Europe, mainly from the 27 member states of EU (173,300).
In the first five months, most of the tourists came from Germany (103,279), Italy (88,978), Israel (87,883), France (58,043) and UK (57,475).
The number of nights spent by tourists, a key indicator in the sector, increased by 0.2 percent in May compared with the same period of 2016 to 1.91 million.
The number of foreign visitors in Romania at boarders increased by 24.1 percent in the first five months, compared with the same period of 2016 up to 4.29 million, while the number of Romanian who left the country increased by 25 percent 7.41 million.
In 2016, the number of foreign tourists in Romania increased by 10.6 percent compared with 2015 up to 2.47 million, a record level of the last decades.
