Norway grants used in projects tackling severe poverty in Romania

The initiative designed to alleviate poverty in Romania, which is backed by Norway grants, has been operational for one year in the country, and has contributed to the development of six projects.

The grants were used in projects that adressed the most vulnerable communities that are living on the verge of poverty.

The whole program has up to EUR 20 million in available funding and the fund operator in Romania is Deloitte Consultanta.

The six projects financed in Romania are locally endorsed by global institutions and organizations, NGOs and national authorities such as UNICEF Romania, Intercommunity Development Association Cluj Metropolitan Area, Roma Educational Fund Romania, The Salvation Army Romania, The Romanian Institute for Research on National Minorities and the City of Oslo.

Among the projects that got grants there is a sorting line facility for used clothing located in Ploiesti city and the construction of social housing for 300 families livin gin the garbage dump on the outskirts of Cluj.

Since 2007, projects developed in Romania have received EUR 404.4 million in financing under Norwegian Grants and SEE funds.

The targeted sectors are environment and climate change, green innovation, research and education, social inclusion, genre equity, health, justice reforms, civil society and cultural heritage.

According to Eurostat, the statistics office of the EU, 41.4 percent of Romanians are at risk of poverty and social exclusion. Moreover, around some 8 percent out of the 3.8 million Romanian children are estimated to live in extreme poverty, says Eurostat.
