Nearly half of the Romanians- 48 percent- think the current economic crisis will last at least 3 more years, while 23 percent think it will end in at most 3 years. Only 6 percent are optimistic and believe the crisis will end in les than a year, according to a survey of the Soros Foundation which is part of the program Romanian Electoral Studies, made in November 2011.

Moreover, 65 percent of Romanians say they have been directly affected by one or more of the four problems specific to the economic crisis: the loss of the work place, unemployment or forced leave for some time, the decrease in revenues, the partial or total loss of investments.

By comparison, only 39 percent of Romanians said they had been affected by the economic crisis in June 2009.

In June 2009, the families of 16 percent of respondents were affected by temporary unemployment or forced leave. By November 2011 the percentage grew to 24 percent.

While in June 2009, 18 percent of Romanians said they or someone in their family lost their workplace, in November this year 25 percent of them said this was the case.

Compared to June 2009 when 24 percent of respondents complained about the decrease in revenues, this year 57 percent of Romanians point to this issue.

The number of Romanians who say they lost part of their investments has also increased since 2009, when there were only 5 percent of the respondents complaining about this to 2011 when 8 percent of respondents said they lost investments.

The largest majority of Romanians- 70 percent- said they were personally affected by the financial crisis to a high or very high extent while 27 percent think they were affected to a small or very small extent.

When analyzing the government’s performance in preventing the economic crisis, most Romanians think the measures applied by the executive have been rather wrong. Only 7 percent say the measures have been rather good and believe the current cabinet is able to administer Romania during the crisis. 23 percent say there were both good and wrong measures, while 10 percent say the government has taken no measure at all.
