The Ministry of Communications will install this year another 300 hotspots in public areas, which will be distributed on the entire territory of the country. This measure is meant to expand the degree of access to broadband services so that more and more users can access the information they need through laptops, PDA (personal digital assistant) or desktop with WiFi connection devices.

The 300 hotspots will be installed with an estimated investment of RON 923,000, no VAT included. The internet flux will be ensured by the Ministry for a year.

Last year the ministry launched the procedure to install 11 hotspots in the first stage. These were installed by the National Society of Radiocommunications in Botosani, Brasov, Piatra Neamt, Ploiesti, Ramnicu Valcea, Slatina, Suceava, Targoviste and Targu Mures.

Later, Romtelecom installed 200 hotspots in 32 counties, and the installation took place by the end of 2009.

All in all, last year a total of 211 hotspots were installed, of which 75 indoors in places such as city halls, libraries and 136 outdoors in parks, historic centers and pedestrian areas. The total investment was RON 590,000, no VAT. For the 211 hotspots, the ministry will ensure the internet flux by the end of 2010, with the possibility to prolong it for another two years.
