The Ministry of Communications launched Ghiseul.ro, a national system of online electronic payment of taxes via bank card.

The system was first launched in two cities: Targu-Mures and Bucharest- sector 2 and sector 6.

Moreover, Romanians can acquire via Ghiseul.ro internet domains with the .ro extension from the National Institute of Research and Development in Informatics.

The project that the Ministry started last year started to gain shape with the help of the Association for Electronic Payments in Romania.

“We believe that accessing this service online benefits not only our clients but also all of Romanian citizens and also the local administrations,’ said Adrian Apolzan, President of APERO. “Let us not forget that very many Romanians abroad were forced to come to Romania to pay their taxes. Also, a person who had an apartment in Bucharest but also another one in Sighisoara had to go to both places, that were very high distances apart in order to pay the same taxes,” he continued.

Ghiseul.ro will be expanded to more local administrations and by 2012 all local administrations will be covered. Thus, the first stage will include cities that have over 150,000 inhabitants. The second stage will include cities up to 150,000 inhabitants and then, within 6 months, the localities and public institutions uncovered during the first two stages will be included in the system.

“We have conceived and developed Ghiseul.ro so that by next year, all Romanians will be able to access it. For this, the city halls must only enroll in the system at their own will or at the request of citizens whom they represent,” said Valerian Vreme, Minister of Communications.
