The Ministry of European Funds (MEF) will allocate EUR 106.5 million to raise the degree of traffic safety, to facilitate traffic during border crossings and to reduce the environmental impact in Romania.

According to a MEF press release, the main objective of this funding project is to reduce the number of deaths due to traffic accidents.

Out of the total budget of EUR 106.5 million, the road safety segment has been allocated the biggest sum on money, EUR 85.2 million.

The European Commission statistics show that Romania has the biggest death rate due to road accidents in the European Union, with 95 deaths per million citizens in 2015, almost double the amount compared to the EU, which registered a rate of 51.5 deaths per million citizens.

MEF has launched in April – May 2016 guides for projects worth EUR 5.8 billion for transport and EUR 3.5 billion for environment. The guides for road safety investment projects address the transport infrastructure administrators and local public authorities, as well as the Traffic Police and the Transport Police departments. Meanwhile, the MEF guides for traffic flow across borders were created for the National Agency of Fiscal Administration (ANAF), the Minister of Transports and the specific police departments involved.

The funding project is part of the Big Infrastructure Operational Program 2014 – 2020, which is the second biggest project in the EU that has approximately EUR 12 billion budget allocated for transport, environment and energy sectors.
