Finance state secretary Gheorghe Gherghina announced on Tuesday that the government agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Commission not to raise the minimum wage by more than the rate of inflation of the last two years, or more than RON 670.
“If unions and employers’ associations don’t agree upon higher level, the government can’t raise it by more then the inflation rate of the last two years”, said the secretary of state, adding that that the RON 670 ceiling was set by letter of intention to the IMF.
He explained that even if unions and employers’ associations agree on a higher level for the minimum wage that will be provided by the national collective labor contract, it will not apply to public workers.
According to Gherghina, 71,000 public workers receive minimum wage.
