Mircea Tudor, the founder president of MB Telecom, a Romanian producer of hi-tech security equipment, is being prosecuted for tax evasion. He is also accused of buying influence.

The investigation has been opened by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA). Investigators say that Tudor paid roughly EUR 1.5 million to a lawyer who claimed that he could help MB Telecom get contracts with Romania’s Customs Authority.

The payments were made between November 2010 and April 11 in several tranches and were covered by fake transactions.

The lawyer Liviu Ardeias, who is prosecuted in this case for influence peddling, has received jail sentences of 6 years and 5 years, respectively, in two separate cases.

The DNA said that the state has lost EUR 227,492 in unpaid profit tax from the deal closed between MB Telecom and the law office of Ardeias.

MB Telecom is the first company in history to have claimed twice the grand prize at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva.

The company has invented a high-performance cargo screening system called Roboscan 1MC and an aircraft screening system called Roboscan 2M Aeria.

MB Telecom operates through two firms, both of which have the HQ in Otopeni, near Bucharest. MB TELECOM-LTD SRL registered sales of EUR 4.6 million and a net income of EUR 1.2 million in 2015. It had 84 employees.

In the same year, MB TELECOM SRL reported sales of EUR 744,693 and a net income of EUR 15,720. The firm had 24 employees.

The DNA set a bail of RON 1 million for Tudor.
