Japan Tobacco International (JTI) has announced that it will invest about EUR 25 million into increasing the production capacity of its factory in Pipera, near Bucharest. The announcement comes after in May the cigarette manufacturer had closed its production facility in Austria, at that time saying that it considers relocating production either in Romania or Poland.

The project will be finalized in the beginning of 2012 and in addition to bringing in new equipment it will also require hiring 140 more people. The cigaratee manufacturer has begun upgrading its Romanian factory two years ago, the 2009 – 2012 investment budget going beyond EUR 45 million, JTI says.
