Jean Claude Juncker: Romania had the courage to establish an anti-corruption court, others didn’t; Government and Parliament must not move away from rule of law

European Commission president Jean Claude Juncker said today in the European Parliament, after the speech held by Romanian president Klaus Iohannis, that his message for the Bucharest government and parliament is that a consensus must be achieved on the rule of law and the anti-corruption fight, in order to avoid negative effects on the future Schengen membership.

“Romania is not a neutral country, but one for which I have deep feelings. The Romanian people has integrated into an European complicity as if it were a founding state. Romania is a provider of stability, not a consumer of stability. Romania was among the first Europeans – for example, it had the first initiative to launch the an anti-corruption court (the DNA), while others did not,” said Juncker.

He added that the lack of a consensus on the rule of law could affect the country’s ability to join the Schengen space.

“July 15, 2014. That’s when I started to call for Romania to join the Schengen space and I had hoped to achieve this before this Commission’s term ended. I want to address the government and the parliament: this goal must not be endangered by moving away from the rule of law principles and my wish is that before Romania takes over the presidency of the EU, a national consensus is reached on the fight against corruption. Otherwise, it would be hard for the Commission to agree upon the recommendations related to the Schengen space,” he stated.
