President Iohannis and Michel Barnier discussed the state of Brexit negotiations

Klaus Iohannis received the European Union (EU) Chief Negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier at the Cotroceni Palace. During the meeting, were addressed the current state of negotiations and the next steps in the process of withdrawing the UK from the EU.

President Klaus Iohannis reiterated Romania’s support for an orderly and predictable UK withdrawal process in order to establish the closest possible relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom.

The President of Romania also emphasized that the main priority at this stage of the negotiations is to finalize the text of the Withdrawal Agreement as soon as possible by identifying solutions to the still divergent issues, especially with regard to the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

In turn, the Union’s chief negotiator for Brexit made a presentation of the progress of the negotiations with the UK and of the next steps in the process of British retreat from the Union.

Michel Barnier highlighted the efforts that his team has consistently sought to reach an agreement with the British side and expressed hope for substantial developments in the negotiations that would allow the UK’s withdrawal agreement to be completed in the EU.

At the same time, the chief negotiator of the European Union for Brexit said that Romania, as a state that will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first semester of 2019, will have an important role to play in providing the necessary institutional framework to allow the orderly withdrawal of the UK from the EU and in the negotiations on future relations between the Union and the United Kingdom.
