The Emergency Ordinance projects regarding the pardon and amendments to the Penal Codes are unacceptable and seem to be made to serve certain interests, warned president Klaus Iohannis, suggesting that the center-left government led by Sorin Grindeanu should abandon such initiatives.

“The Prosecutor’s Office, the National Directorate for Anti-corruption (DNA), the High Court of Cassation and Justice, the Investigation Directorate of Organized Criminality and Terrorism (DIICOT), the magistrates’ associations and the civil societies were clearly against the change of legislative framework regarding the corruption, service and integrity abuse in emergency regime, without objective analysis and in non-transparent conditions,” said Iohannis.

“There are sufficient arguments to determine the Government to withdraw these Emergency Ordinances,” added Iohannis.

The Government will respond to the president’s request regarding the projects withdrawal when the PM Grindeanu comes back from the United Stats of America, said the minister of justice, Florin Iordache.

“If you ask me personally, I initiated to have points of view and observations regarding the draft bills. (…) Their role is to have an opinion, but the point of view of prosecutors was known because they investigated the files, people were prosecuted. I look for a solution and if someone can give me a solution, we embrace it. That’s why it’s a debate point,”  said the minister on Friday at B1 Tv.

Iohannis made an unexpected visit to the Government meeting where he announced that the pardon draft bill and the changes to the penal legislation need transparent debates.

Protests erupted in several Romanian cities after the pardon draft bill was put up for debate.
