INS: Romania road freigth transport sector up by 8.8 pct in 2016, railway down by 4.9 pct

The road freigth transport sector went up by 8.8 percent in 2016, compared with the previous year, of the overall 216 million tonnes of transported merchandise, out of which 80 percent operated within the borders, while the railway transport went down by 4.9 percent compared with 2015, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The internal transport volume of freight went up by 3.3 percent compared with 2015.

The volume of transported freight on railway registered a drop by 4.9 percent compared with 2015. Some 52.6 million tonnes of merchandise were transported, out of which 79.4 percent in international transport. The tariff transport of merchandise registered a drop by one percent.

Around 46.2 million tonnes of freight went by sea, out of which 46.3 million tonnes in international transport. Compared with 2015 the total volume had an increase of 4.1 percent.

The merchandises transported on internal navigable routes amounted to 30.4 million tonnes in 2016, out of which 48.2 percent in national transport.

The total freigh volumes that were transported registered a growth by 1.5 percent compared with the previous year, while the merchandise transport went down by 0.1 percent.

The transport via oil pipeline registered a volume of 6.8 million tonnes and in the air transport the volume of transported freight stood at 40,100 tonnes, a growth by 16.9 percent, compared with 2015, out of which 98.5 percent in international transport.

Last year, 63.2 percent of the freight volume was transported on short distances in the national road transport, between 1-49 km,  20.7 percent on distances between 50-149 km and 14.3 percent on distances between 150-499 km.
