Government announces three days of national mourning after death of King Michael I

PM Mihai Tudose announced on Wednesday that Romania will hold three days of national mourning after the death of Romania’s last monarch, King Michael I. The chosen dates are December 14^th, 15^th and 16^th, when the former King’s funeral will also take place.

National mourning means that the Romanian flag will be flown at half mast at all local and national public institutions, political party headquarters, borders and other locations that represent the state. Furthermore, public service radio and television channels must adapt their programming, meaning that the broadcasting of all cultural, artistic and sporting events has to be postponed.

King Michael I died on December 5^th at his residence in Switzerland, and will be buried at the Royal Cathedral in Curtea de Arges, next to his wife Queen Anne, who died last year.

Books of condolence are open from today at Peles Castle in Sinaia, the Royal Palace (Calea Victoriei), and Elisabeta Palace.
