Half of the eight players in the quarterfinals in the WTA Madrid tennis tour are Romanians, as Simona Halep, Camelia Begu, Sorana Carstea and Patricia Tig qualified for the stage.
“It seems the Bucharest Open has come a couple of months early,” the WTA website said, referring to the large share of Romanian players making it to the quarters.
In the fight for the semifinals Patricia Tig (WTA 134) will meet Australian Samantha Stosur, while Sorana Carstea (WTA 127) will play Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.
“It’s a Romanian tournament, I can say,” Halep said with a laugh after her strong 6-2, 6-3 win over Timea Bacsinszky. “I feel [at] home here. I feel good always. I have great memories from 2014. I just try to make it best tournament for myself. I try just to enjoy it, because I like it very much.”
Simona Halep, WTA 7, and Camelia Begu, WTA 34, will be playing each other today.
“Extraordinary performance and a first in Romanian tennis! […] Congratulations, girls, and good luck,” the Ministry of Youth and Sports said on its Facebook page.
