Foreign tourists in Romania up 7.8 pct in Q1 to 481,000

The number of foreign tourists in Romania rose by 7.8 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, to 481,800, due mainly to the growing interest of Asian and European tourists, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In 2017, the number of foreign tourists in Romania reached a record-level of 2.75 million, up 11.3 percent compared with 2016.

The foreign tourists in Romania came mainly from Europe (357,700, +5.2 percent y/y) in January-March, followed by Asia (72,500, +15.1 percent), North America (26,900, +1.5 percent), South America (4,200, +16.7 percent) and Africa (4,200, +7.7 percent).

The number of Romanian tourists rose by 5.8 percent in the first three months of 2018, to 1.7 million.

The overnight stays, a key index for the tourism sector, increased by 6.2 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, to 4.13 million.
