FBI Director, Robert S. Mueller III, met yesterday with president Traian Basescu, prosecutor general Laura Codruta Kovesi and heads of security authorities, including secret services (SRI, SIE) and the police. The director made a similar visit to Bucharest in 2006.

The internet criminality was among the topics of discussion and U.S. authorities are working closely with Romanian counter-parts in fighting criminality networks specialized in “phishing”, credit card and ATM thefts, auction fraud, and other forms of cyber crime. US and Romania jointly reiterated that cybercriminals will be pursued to the fullest extent of Romanian and U.S. law.

Around 228 Romanian law enforcement officers have graduated from the FBI’s International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest and from the National Academy in the United States. Another 350 officers took specialized courses within the same institution.

The Americans also acknowledged the professionalism of the staff working at the Office of the Prosecutor General that includes the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) and the Directorate of Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation.

The U.S. urges the Romanian government to find suitable successors for the Prosecutor General Laura Codruta Kovesi and DNA Chief, Daniel Morar, whose terms will expire in 2012, after 6 years of “impressive accomplishments”, shows the press release issued after the meeting.
