Eurostat: Romanians pay less for food than the EU average

Romanians pay less than the average European on food and beverages products, tobacco, restaurant meals or hotel accommodation, found the latest Eurostat survey. At the same time, the price of clothing, electronic products and cars are closer to the EU survey, the same source acknowledges.

The index for consumption products and services price is for Romania 59 percent of the EU average, the lowest in Europe. For food and non-alcoholic beverages Romania stands at 67 percent of the EU average, while alcoholic beverages and tobacco is 64 percent.

Romania thus has the cheapest food in Europe, except for Bulgaria, where the prices of these products category are 66 percent of the European average.

With clothing, electronics, and cars, Romania stands close to other EU countries, with clothing prices being at 94 percent of the EU average, while electronics and white-goods standing at 96 percent of the EU average. Cars are sold at 88 percent of the EU average, mainly due to the sales from local production.

EU’s highest prices are reported in Denmark (143 percent of the EU average), Finland (123 percent), Luxembourg and Sweden (120 percent each), Ireland (118 percent), Belgium and France (112 percent), Austria (107 percent), Holland (106 percent), Germany and Italy (104 percent).
