The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, has unlocked the reimbursement of EUR 167 million for projects financed through the POSDRU program in the 2007-2013 framework.

The payments had been blocked in February due to errors in procedures.

Cristian Ghinea, the minister of EU funds, said the EC move is beneficial for Romania more funds will be to finance the country’s development.

The management authority of POSDRU has submitted a similar request to the EC for funds worth EUR 372 million.

“We estimate that the total amount of EUR 539.4 million will return to the state budget by the end of this year. This will translate into a 10 percent increase of the total absorption rate for POSDRU,” said Ghinea.

Michel Servoz, the director-general of the European Commission’s department for employment, social affairs and inclusion, said that EU funds could be used to finance the government’s poverty alleviation program.
