European Commissioner Corina Cretu’s office announced today the approval of financing for a project aimed at the rehabilitation of road connections Baia Mare – Livada and Livada – Halmeu, part of the National Road 1C, respectively Satu Mare – Livada, part of the National Road 19.

The eligible value of the project amounts to over EUR 37 million, of which co-financing from the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund will reach over EUR 31 million. The project aims to rehabilitate nearly 77 km of the two national roads.

Road transport infrastructure is a key area for development of Romania and the European Commission supports the sector through grants. The rehabilitation of road sections between Satu Mare and Baia Mare creates the premises for a safer and faster transport between neighboring counties to the northwest of the country, with a direct effect on economic growth in the area,” stated the commissioner.

According to the statement, the project is retroactive, as rehabilitation works are nearing completion their costs were borne initially by the Romanian state with money from other funding sources.

The decision aims at co-financing the project through the 2007-2013 Transport Operational Program, under Priority Axis 2 “Modernization and development of national transport infrastructure in order to develop a sustainable transport system”.
