The European commissioner for regional policy, Corina Cretu approved on July 12 the modification of the main project „The rail 5 of the metro, section Raul Doamnei- Eroilor, including Valea Ialomitei”.

The decision focuses on splitting the project in two phases, the first one being included in the programmed period 2007-2013, while the second one will be financed in the programed period 2014-2020.

As a result of the decision, the first phase has an eligible value of almost EUR 200 million, out of which approximately 170 million represent the co-financing from EU through the European Fund for regional development. The total value of the project is EUR 480 million.

“The rail 5 of the metro is a project of high importance for Bucharest citizens because it will reduce the riding time between Drumul Taberei and Eroilor zone with approximately 20 minutes. It is estimated that half of the 335,000 citizens from Drumul Taberei will use the metro line. Moreover, it is expected to make the road traffic less crowded in the West side of the capital, ” said Cretu.

The rail 5 of the metro will have a total length of 6.7 km, 10 stations and a car shed situated at Valaea Ialomitei station. The estimated date for the finalization of the whole project is December 31 2017. The main project is part of the operational program „Transport”, primary axe 2 ‘The modernization and development of national transport infrastructure aiming to develop a new durable transport system’.
