Employment rate among Romania’s working age population up to 61.8 percent in Q2

The employment rate of Romania’s working age population (15-64 years old) stood at 61.8 percent in Q2, marking an increase compared to the previous quarter. For the age group (20-64 years old) the employment rate stood at 66.6 percent, 3.4 percent short of the national target set as part of the Europe 2020 Strategy, data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Friday shows.

According to the INS, in the second quarter of 2016, the working age population of Romania totaled 9.056 million, out of which, 8.526 million were employed and 530,000 were unemployed. In Q2 the employment rate of the working age population (15-64 years old) stood at 61.8 percent, up by 2 percent compared to the previous quarter. The employment rate was higher among men (70 percent), compared to women (53.4 percent).

The employment rate among working age Romanians was even in rural and urban areas. The employment rate among youth aged 15-24 stood at 22.2 percent.

According to the INS, in Q2 2016 the employment rate of the population aged 20 – 64 stood at 66.6 percent, 3.4 percent short of the national target of 70 percent set by the Europe 2020 economic growth strategy.

During the period surveyed, the INS data show that the unemployment rate stood at 5.9 percent, down from the Q2 (6.6 percent). The gap between men and women stood at 1.7 percent (66 percent for men and 4.9 percent women). In rural areas the unemployment rate stood at 5.9 percent, while in urban areas at 5.8 percent. The unemployment rate was highest among urban youth aged 15-24, namely 19.4 percent).
