In the wake of the deadly earthquake that hit the Italian peninsula on Wednesday morning, the Embassy of Romania to Italy has contacted Italian authorities to request information on the existence of Romanian citizens among the victims.
According to a press release by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Consulate of Romania in Bologna was mobilized in order to ensure assistance and consular protection. To this purpose, the statement informs, a mobile consular team was transferred from Bologna to the site.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with local authorities and is ready to provide consular assistance when needed. Until now, the Romanian diplomatic institutes have not received requests for consular assistance from Romanian citizens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
According to the statement, Romanian citizens affected by the earthquake can request consular assistance using the following phone numbers: Embassy of Romania to Italy (0039) 06 835 233 58, (0039) 06 835 233 56, the General Consulate of Romania in Bologna (0039) 051 5872120, (0039) 051 5872209. The calls will be forwarded to the Contact and Support Center for Romanian Citizens Abroad (CCSCRS).
Italian authorities reported at least 38 deaths following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit central Italy on Wednesday morning. At least 150 are reported missing. The quake hit Amatrice, a town and comune in the province of Rieti, northern Lazio, as well as Accumoli, where most deaths were reported, and Arquata del Tronto.
