Alexandru Nazare, minister of Transportation, said, today, the European Commission (EC) has approved two major railway infrastructure projects worth EUR 900 million The announcement comes after the Romanian minister met with commissioner on regional policy Johannes Hahn.
The European funds will be used to upgrade 110 km of railway in Western Romania. Once these projects have been approved, reimbursements could already be made for approved contracts. Financing will also be ensured for projects that are in tendering stage.
Nazare told the EU commissioner that Romania’s economy has been hit by hard by massive snow fall in recent week, and authorities should be allowed to purchase snow removal equipment from the EU funds allocated for transportation infrastructure.
Last year, reimbursements from Brussels for transportation infrastructure projects increased ten times compared to 2010.
