A new mission of the European Commission will travel to Bucharest to assess the progress achieved by Romania under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (MCV) between September 18-21. The announcement was made by Minister of Justice Tudorel Toader.

The mission will include acting Director-General for Justice and Consumers Paraskevi Michou, who visited Romania in January, and William Sleath, Director for Policy Co-ordination at EC’s Secretariat General.

The two chambers of Parliament will hold a common meeting with presidents of the legal committees on September 19 and are expected to take part in a joint meeting held on September 19 and 20 at the Ministry of Justice.

In view of the meeting, the Minister of Justice asked MPs to send their contributions on the CVM recommendations no. 1,2,3,4,7 and 10. They include the method of appointing chief prosecutors of the National Anticorruption Agency (DNA), General Prosecutor’s Office and the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), as well as the stage of implementation of previous recommendations, namely the enforcement of integrity criteria, the code of conduit of MPs and the Parliament’s stance on requests to lift MP’s immunity.

Minister Toader’s proposed amendments to the justice law were rejected by DNA prosecutors. During Michou’s previous visit to Bucharest, she announced the CVM was not going to be lifted this year.
