The European commissioner for regional policy, Corina Cretu, met with the Romanian minister of transport Razvan Cuc in Brussels to discuss about the implementation stage of the projects from transport and about financing through cohesion policies, according to the European Commission site.

She underlined the benefits of the European funds, which made possible the expansion and improvement of the transport network from Romania, as well as the sections Nadlac–Lugoj and Bucharest–Constanta, part of the trans-European corridors by restoring 301 km infrastructure and within the highway network TEN-T, in which more than 2,400 km of highways were restored.

At the same time, Cretu said that it’s important to fully use the available funds: „Romania has at its disposal currently over EUR 6.8 billion to invest in transport, out of which EUR 5.1 billion from European funds. This historical chance has to be used at its maximum.”

Cuc mentioned some transport projects that are a priority of the government such as the highway Sibiu–Pitesti, the southern bypass of Bucharest and the railway Radna–Gurasada–Simeria, as well as the trans-European corridors, such as the highway Targu-Mures–Iasi.

In the 2007-2013 period, approximately EUR 5.1 billion of the structural funds and the European funds were allocated to the transports field from Romania. In the current period (2014-202), the Operational Program for Large Infrastructure have allocated approximately EUR 9.4 billion of the cohesion fund and from the European fund of regional development.
