An exhibition of works by the Russian-French modernist painter Marc Chagall, one of the masters of the early 20th century, is running until June 26, 2016, at the Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni, Prahova county.

Thus, the Cantacuzino Castle will exhibit works from the series “The Odyssey”, “Windows of Jerusalem”, and a splendid collection of 10 lithographs inspired by the ceiling of the Garnier Opera in Paris and the famous “Illustrations for Bible”.

“We are showing now a collection of 146 of his most important lithographs. They had been printed mainly in the atelier of Fernand Mourlot in Paris, who published as well the catalogue of Chagall’s artworks, at least what had been printed in the press of Mourlot. Chagall had been one of the seldom printing artists. He painted the motives on the stone and printed them by himself. We see it in the illustrations of the Jewish Chandelier in “Windows of Jerusalem” and in “The 10 Laws” as well from the same series and the excerpt from the ceiling of Opera Garnier in Paris”, said Thomas Emmerling, the private collector.

“Marc Chagall was known for his remarkable oil paintings, the artist’s style remains unique to these days. More or less in his work he is describing dreams: his compositions are painted dreams of an innocent world, where everybody is happy. Even the Cyclop in the Odysseus series seems to be happy when got blinded’’, he added.

Marc Chagall was born 1887 in Witebsk, Belarus, as a son of a Jewish Merchant. In the Jewish Russian dialect of his hometown, there had been no word for “artistic painter” because it had been considered unimportant. In spite of this, he became one of the most important artists of the 20th century. He died in the age of 98 years in 1985 in St.-Paul-de-Vence, near Nice at the French Cote d’Azur.

After being reintroduced into the tourist circuit, the Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni became an important cultural attraction for the entire area, and is home to the Canta Cuisine Restaurant, the exhibitions and the classical music evenings Prahova Classic Nights.
