World No 1 Simona Halep will play in the quarter final of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, against WTA No 6 Karolina Pliskova, who topped Barbora Strycova in an all-Czech clash in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.

The Romanian player is still nursing an ankle injury she sustained in the first round of the tournament in her win against Australia’s Destanee Aiava. Although her form was uncertain before her second match, she breezed past Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 6-2 and later Halep withstood an epic three hour match, which she described as a “marathon” to defeat Lauren Davis 4-6, 6-4, 15-13 in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament.

In the fourth round she defeated Naomi Osaka in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 and showed no signs of the injury that has been plaguing her since the first round.

“Last night was really tough,” said Halep before her match against Naomi Osaka. “I couldn’t sleep. I had pain everywhere. But I slept before the match two hours, and I was fresh after that. I felt good. Ankle is still sore. But I’m not thinking about that any more. I saw that I can win matches with it, so now I’m not that worried any more.”

Speaking of her quarter-final encounter, she said: “It is going to be a new match. You never know what’s going to happen.”

The match will start at around 6 am Romanian time and will be the last on the day session on Rod Laver arena.
