The Romanian Transportation Ministry selected Astaldi and Max Boegl Romania to built a 20.49 km highway section from Cernavoda to Medgidia, part of the road (A2) that connects Bucharest to the Black Sea city of Constanta.

The value of the contract is USD 166 million and the road section has to be completed in 15 months. Funding for this infrastructure project will be covered by the European Investment Bank, The European Commission through cohesion funds and the state budget.

In April 2011, Romania cancelled the contract with French company Colas, which was supposed to deliver the Cernavoda-Medgidia section, on the grounds that Colas Company increased the contract value by EUR 8 million.

Anca Boagiu, the Transportation minister, expects the A2 “Sun Highway” to be fully operational by the beginning of 2013.
