The Financial Surveillance Authority (ASF) offered clarifications on the scandal surrounding it through a press release issued in response to President Traian Basescu’s accusations. The current administration board defends itself by making reference to former leaders of regulatory authorities and to the Astra situation.

“ASF recognizes every citizen’s right to a personal opinion”, according to the press release.

ASF considers that the term “cesspit” used by the president to describe the board is “unacceptable” and it connects Basescu’s stance on the matter with the recent decision to place Astra Asigurari under special administration.

ASF considers itself “a victim of an unprecedented attack over an institution of the state” and it suggests it has was subjected to political pressures over the entire span of the year it has been in function. At the end of the press release, ASF highlights that former leaders of supervisory authorities were named through political channels and some of them had bigger salaries than the ones currently paid to the ASF management team.

The authority offers the example of Constantin Buzoianu, former CSA president, who earned over EUR 100,000 in two months, as opposed to the EUR 72.000 earned by Dan Radu Rusanu in November and December.
