African swine fever expands to 276 localities, with 1,062 active outbreaks

African swine fever is expanding in Romania, currently having been found in 276 localities in 17 counties, where 1,062 outbreaks are active, of which 15 in commercial farms, the The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) said.

In total, 356,144 pigs affected by the disease were eliminated. The Veterinary Authority claims that 5 outbreaks have been extinguished in Satu-Mare County, and Carniprod SRL, Tulcea County, resumed its activity on August 14, 2018.

According to the quoted sources, the most outbreaks are still in Tulcea county – 566, of which 5 in commercial farms and one on a type A holding plus 67 cases in wild boar. In Ialomita 125 outbreaks in households and 33 cases of wild boar were found. In the city of Braila there were 106 outbreaks (of which 9 outbreaks in commercial farms) and in Constanta – 84 outbreaks in households and three cases of wild boar.

By November 1, 7,785 owners were compensated, with a total amount of RON 189.1 million. The presence of the virus in our country was first reported on July 31, 2017, in Satu-Mare County.

”The evolution of the disease is constantly monitored through clinical and laboratory exams, and the existing situation is analyzed on a daily basis, measures are being implemented and actions are taken as a function of the circumstances. ANSVSA calls for support and understanding of citizens’ compliance with these measures, and the serious economic consequences of its occurrence,” ANSVSA representatives said.

African swine fever is a viral disease of domestic and wild swine with rapid evolution and mortality of up to 100 percent for sick pigs. There is no vaccine or treatment for this disease.
