Another 70 kilometers of the Net City underground metropolitan fiber optic backbone will be in use by the end of June, according to the general manager of Netcity Telecom, Nicolae Ghioca, quoted by Mediafax newswire. Currently, there are 11 kilometers of functional network for cables in the areas of Unirii, Decebal, Burebista and Universitate.
The project stipulates that 300 kilometers of backbone on the main streets in central areas of the capital should be ready between now and May 2011.
Throughout 2010 and 2011 Bucharest will be split into central and adjacent areas, depending on cardinal points and other infrastructure works carried out by the City Hall.
In July works will start in north-west Bucharest, in Victoriei Square and the Basarab passage. The second stage will start in November and will cover east Bucharest where the City Hall will be carrying out infrastructure works, allowing the underground network to be done simultaneously.
This year Netcity Telecom has invested EUR 30 million. The contract for the fiber optic metropolitan backbone was signed in June 2008 for a period of 49 years. The signatories were the Bucharest City Hall, on one side, and UTI Systems and Netcity Telecom, on the other.
The backbone will be installed in three stages with a final deadline of 2012. The total value of the works was estimated to reach EUR 200 million.
