A second landslide occurred on Sunday night on the A1 Motorway construction site (Lugoj-Deva segment), in the same place the first landslide happened in October, according to Motorway Company head Narcis Neaga.
“The landslide took place in the same place as the previous one. Last month’s issue had been resolved by the constructor. These phenomena appear due to unprecedented heavy rains, which have been going on for 45 days,” Neaga said.
The area where the landslides have happened is called the Bats’ Hill. It has also had other problems due to a cave with protected bats. After three years, environmental specialists allowed the bats to be moved to another cave in Timis county.
The motorway segment is contracted to Romanian company UMB Spedition, which is using a technical plan that was approved by the National Roads Company, against the advice of specialists.
The A1 motorway starts in Bucharest and should cross Romania reaching the Hungary border in Nadlac, crossing through Pitesti, Sibiu, Deva, Timisoara and Arad. The Lugoj-Deva segment is due to be completed by next summer, according to the construction contract.
