The producers of innovative drugs in Romania say the country has the potential to become an attractive destination for research and development in the biotechnology sector.

Gabor Staniszlav, country director Amgen Romania, said that additional funding for R&D could help Romania become a biotechnology hub, replicating the growth model in the IT industry.

“Amgen has invested USD 4 billion for the R&D in 2015, out of which USD 600 million were used to back innovative products and the construction of production facilities. A portion of this capital could be allocated for Romania, if we develop a strategy on the medium and long term,” said the Amgen executive during an event.

Players say that Romania could look at the success story of Ireland in order to attract big investments in this field.

Andrew Harwood, the deputy director of the economic mission of Ireland in Romania, said the producers of innovative drugs have invested around USD 8 billion for the development of production facilities in Ireland. Most of the investments were made in the past decade.

In Romania, the IT sector generates more than 6 percent of GDP and employs some 140,000 people, according to the Trade Association of Software and Services Industry (ANIS). The IT sector has registered a turnover of EUR 2.75 billion last year.
