Romanian President Traian Basescu arrived on Friday morning in Brussels, where he has scheduled meetings with the president of the European Commission (EC), Jose Manuel Barroso, the EC vice-president, Viviane Reding, and the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy.

The president said yesterday evening that he requested this official visit in order to discuss with the Brussels officials the most pressing issues that impact Romania and the EU.

“A swift process of changing the EU is currently underway, and in the same time, there are particular processes of interest for Romania that I want to discuss with the three high-ranking officials of the EU,” said President Basescu.

The latest findings of the cooperation and verification mechanism (CVM) due to be published by the EU this year  and the outlook of Romania’s accession in the Schengen space will be raised during discussions.

The president will reopen the negotiations regarding a one year extension for using EU funds. In addition, he will try to accelerate the procedures for financing the Extreme Light Infrastructure project from EU sources. This is a research program carried out by the Nuclear Physics Institute at Magurele.

The next EU budget and the formation of a banking union are other topics of discussion prepared by President Basescu.
