Romania’s Prime Minister Victor Ponta will fly to China next week to discuss with his Chinese counterpart Li Kekiang about economic affairs and is also scheduled to attend the United Nations General Assembly in late September in New York City, US, reports Mediafax newswire.

PM Ponta said he will also travel to Huston, Texas, where he will meet with the management teams of the biggest US-based energy company that “have investments or plan to invest” in Romania. Some of the largest energy players are based in Huston including Exxon and Honeywell, both present in Romania.

Ponta said he will not meet with representatives of Chevron, the oil major that is currently looking for shale gas in eastern Romania

Romania has a strategic partnership with the US, covering a wide array of fields from military cooperation to trade and education. Both countries are currently working on the missile defense shield in Deveselu. The system should become operational next year and is designed to enhance NATO’s defense capabilities.

However, the country has also intensified its relations with China in the past two years, hosting the third Economic and Trade Forum of China and Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries in Bucharest last November.

During this event, the government has signed a handful of memorandums with Chinese companies regarding investments in key sectors of the local economy, including transport and energy. Romanian officials have made follow-up meetings in China this year regarding these investments. The construction of two nuclear reactors at Cernavoda, which requires an investment of around EUR 6.4 billion, is currently under negotiations.
