Klaus Iohannis reveals topics to be included in the May 26 justice referendum

Romanian president Klaus Iohannis made a statement on Thursday announcing the topics he wants the population to vote on in a referendum that will be held on the same day as the European Parliament elections, on May 26.

The president has notified the Parliament of the two “issues of national interest” that would be put up for public vote in the referendum:

1. Banning amnesty & pardons for corruption-related crimes
2. No longer allowing the government to pass emergency orders related to crimes, punishment, as well as allowing more institutions (such as the Superior Magistrates’ Council or the Supreme Court) to notify the Constitutional Court about emergency orders

“Citizens must decide whether punishments for individuals convicted of corruption should be erased and whether they want the government to continue to pass OUGs on sensitive matters like the judiciary system or criminal law,” Iohannis said.

The president also called for zero tolerance of corruption and said that the current PSD government was violating rule of law and fighting a permanent war against the justice system, through emergency orders which have been strongly criticized by the European Union.

“Our society is tired and it is afraid that every day when there is a government meeting, as they don’t know what’s really on the agenda,” he added.
