How to make a city great: two starting points

Newsroom 29/08/2019 | 14:23

We are talking a lot about startups and we think that any company is a startup. In reality, a startup is a company that has the potential to grow rapidly. Just being a new venture is not enough for a company to be considered a startup. Also, it is not necessary for a startup to act in the technological field or to “raise” a venture capital investment or to have an exit, although these three are preferable. The only essential thing is growth. In this context, how do we build the startup ecosystem in Romania, made up of companies that can grow rapidly? I propose you two pillars essential for the growth of this ecosystem.

Bridges between universities, research institutes and investors

I have analyzed the major entrepreneurship centers in Europe and I identified the most important type of organization that is missing from Bucuresti-Ilfov region in relation to other big cities: the scientific park that connects the academic environment with the economic field, between the research one and the start-up ecosystem, so as to transfer the science to the needs of the companies. Sweden, a country with 10 million inhabitants, has 12 science parks. In Poland there are four, the Czech Republic has two major science parks, the Netherlands has six such organizations. Romania has no science park yet. A project with great potential is Măgurele Science Park, the science park that will be developed around the Măgurele Laser. The project aims to coagulate the local administration, the education area and the business area to create a research and innovation hub, which will attract local and international projects. The economic and innovative potential is huge! A science will attract companies and fuel regional economic growth, as Business Review analysis covered.

Specifically, the objective of Măgurele Science Park is to develop the innovative economy, by supporting the commercialization of R&D results and spin-off systems within Universities and Research Institutes and participating in the creation of the relevant culture in this field, as well as capitalizing on the presence of the ELI-NP project and the IFIN-HH Institute in the adjacent area Măgurele Science Park and as stakeholders of the MSP. By providing facilities for start-ups and spin-offs of universities and research institutes, as well as research and development departments, the future project can contribute to the development of synergies between the innovative entrepreneurial environment and the research-development environment.

Network and access to international communities
Like Warsaw and Vienna cities, the capital of Romania and the County need a modern narrative, oriented to entrepreneurial initiative, in order to be better known among young people in the country and foreign investors or foreign entrepreneurs who want to invest in other big cities. Europe. A StartOut Romania strategy can be complemented with the StartIn Romania approach, aimed not only at the big strategic and financial investors, but also at the international start-ups that expand their teams in Bucharest. Currently, there is a decision to attract large foreign investors through projects like Invest Romania, but the attention should be shifted also to future startups created by foreigners.
