eMAG reached net-zero carbon emissions for its operations

eMAG neutralized the carbon footprint generated by its offset operations. Moreover, the company is committing to reduce the carbon footprint of its products and services across the entire supply chain in the next 10 years. In the last year, eMAG Group has managed to reduce the emissions generated by its operations by 8%, from 9,993 tons in 2019 to 9,216 tons in 2020, according to Ernst&Young Amsterdam calculations.

Achieving the net-zero goal in terms of the direct impact of the eMAG operations is part of an extensive plan of measures for environmental protection, applied in three main areas of impact: sustainable operations, launching of a Commitment for the Environment and supporting the local sustainable initiatives.

„We transform our operations in order to reduce the carbon emissions and we will help our partners to do the same through the Commitment for the Environment. As well, we will support the initiatives which take away the carbon in order to remain net zero for the direct emissions related to our activity, but also to become net zero for the entire supply and sale chain”, said Tudor Manea, CEO eMAG.

The path to net-zero

Sustainable operations which reduce the carbon emissions

To reduce the greenhouse gas emission, eMAG has already taken a series of measures that implies operations with a sustainable approach, such as the easybox network, which has now reached over 1,000 units across the country. Through them, the level of the direct carbon emissions for the operations in Romania has been significantly reduced by 15.8%. This impact is generated by the last-mile deliveries, given the fact that a courier performs a single route to deliver more parcels to easybox, a situation where emissions are reduced by 95% compared to standard delivery, according to a study from 2019.

The efforts to reduce the level of pollution in urban centers and to reduce the carbon footprint were also supported by investing in the fleet of 100% electric vehicles. By the end of 2021, eMAG plans to expand its fleet of electric cars to 100 vehicles, which will replace the conventional ones.

Equally, eMAG has invested in infrastructure with low impact on the environment, such as the logistics center in Joița commune, which will be fully supplied with energy from renewable sources generated on-site. This logistic center will have a total of 40,000 photovoltaic panels and a project with 10-acre afforestation.

Circular economy

The resealed products section used by eMAG for over 10 years increases the life cycle of the products, which re-enter the use circuit at a lower price. By adding value to already unsealed products, eMAG contributes to reducing the amount of waste generated.

Also, to support this strategic direction, eMAG participates in the government program “Wreck for home appliances”, which stimulates the purchase of energy-efficient products.

Supporting the environment by offsetting carbon emissions

Another approach through which eMAG supports the reduction of the carbon footprint is the involvement in initiatives for conservation and afforestation of forests in the Făgăraș Mountains, through a partnership with the Carpathia Conservation Foundation, thus contributing to the restoration of natural ecosystems for biodiversity and local communities. The vision of the foundation is to create a true European “Yellowstone” in Romania.

At the same time, eMAG collaborates with Green Tech and offsets its carbon footprint through the only project that reduces emissions by recycling PET, accredited Gold Standard at European level. Green Tech closes the PET plastic waste circuit, recycling 2 billion bottles used annually and uses the recovered plastic to create new products, such as recycled PET granules, polyester synthetic fibers or PET tape.
